Suggested Criteria for Non-Teacher/Volunteer Coaches

Schools are encouraged to consider the following prior to engaging the services of a non-teacher coach:

  • Applicant completes an application form (consult the Sample Non-Teacher/Volunteer Coaching Application Form)
  • Applicant supplies two references.
  • Applicant demonstrates coaching expertise. For higher risk sports, this may be derived from one of the following:
    • Completion of the NCCP Competition Introduction Multi Sport Modules (if applicable – consult the coaching qualifications section of the specific activity page)
    • Completion of Sport Specific NCCP training in the Instruction of Competition Stream or old Level 1 Technical
    • Attendance at a relevant clinic or workshop within the past three years provided by an instructor who is knowledgeable of the activity (for example, appropriate skills and progressions), and where safety is addressed as outlined in Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools.
    • Past experience within the last 3 years as a coach in the sport, having knowledge of the activity (for example, appropriate skills and progressions) and current safety practices as outlined in Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools.
  • Applicant presents a criminal record check and child abuse registry check (as necessary).
  • Applicant has completed Respect In Sport.
  • Applicant agrees to a process for monitoring of his/her coaching activities (for example, a seasonal review).
  • Applicant agrees to a process for resolving issues accompanied by appropriate disciplinary action by the school.
  • Applicant agrees to abide by all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Applicant undergoes an orientation session, with the school principal or designate, to:
    • review coaching philosophy of school;
    • review relevant sections of Manitoba Physical Activity Safety in Schools;
    • outline school policies with respect to academic eligibility;
    • highlight expected coach conduct and code of behaviour for athletes; and
    • clarify school policies with respect to supervision and travel.
  • Applicant agrees to attend a pre-season coaches’ meeting of school and/or association coaches, if requested.
  • Applicant agrees to communicate regularly with the designated supervisor (for example, the coach liaison).
