MPASS Revisions - September 2023

The following is a summary of MPASS revisions for the 2023-24 school year.

Note: This summary is not meant to replace a regular review of activity safety page information on the part of the user prior to starting an activity.  

Revisions to Activity Safety Pages

Activity Safety Pages are physical activity specific and are designed to provide the user with appropriate safety information to minimize elements of risk associated with each physical activity.

Fishing (Ice): K-8 C/I, 9-12 C/I
  • A safety page has been created.

 

Fishing (Shore): K-8 C/I, 9-12 C/I
  • A safety page has been created.

 

Golf: K-8 C/I, K-8 IS, 9-12 C/I, 9-12 IS
  • A recommended minimum distance of 8 to 10 feet between the controlled hitting area and marked area for non-hitting participants has been added to Facilities.

 

Hockey (Ball/Floor): K-8 C/I, K-8 IS, 9-12 C/I
  • COSOM has been removed from the title and throughout safety page.
  • Felt puck has been added as approved to Equipment.
  • Protective eye wear is strongly recommended.

 

Outdoor Education (Canoe Tripping): K-8 C/I, 9-12 C/I
  • Definition of Canoe Tripping was changed to 'any multi-day canoe trip' regardless of travel distance or location.
  • Qualifications for Trip Guides (Outside Providers), Trip Guides (School Staff), have changed to reflect trips up to 3 days and trips 4 or more days in length.
  • Qualifications for Assistant Trip Guides have changed.
  • The listing of accepted Wilderness First Aid certifications have changed. 

 

Outdoor Education (Canoeing): K-8 C/I, 9-12 C/I
  • Definition of Canoeing was changed to 'single day canoe experiences including canoe trips on rivers, lakes, base camp canoeing, and Learn-to-Canoe experiences in controlled environments such as pools and small human-made bodies of water.
  • The Facilities information has changed to reflect the differences in single-day canoe trips and Learn-to-Canoe experiences.
  • Qualifications for Trip Guides (Outside Providers) and Trip Guides (School Staff), have changed to reflect trips day trips and Learn-to-Canoe experiences.

 

Ringette (Ice): K-8 C/I
  • A safety page has been created.
Revisions to Boilerplates

Boilerplates are safety standards that are applicable to multiple activity safety standards and may be applied across the different settings (curricular/intramural or interschool). An example of a boilerplate within the Equipment section of an activity safety standards is: “Determine that all equipment is safe for use (for example, no sharp corners, cracks, or splinters). Students must be encouraged to report equipment problems to the teacher.”

Special Rules and Instructions
  • Previous Safety Standard:  Students with Additional Needs:  The Teacher must make appropriate accommodations/modifications to provide a safe learning environment which addresses both activity and student specific concerns.
  • New Safety Standard:  Students with Additional Needs:  The Teacher must make appropriate accommodations/modifications to provide a safe learning environment which addresses both activity and student specific concerns.  Consult OPHEA's Disability-Centred Movement: Supporting Inclusive Physical Education for supportive resources.

Special Rules and Instructions

  • Waivers and Informed Consent page has been created.  This page provides definitions of waivers and informed consent and the school/school division role in reviewing Outside Activity Provider waivers prior to participating in an activity.

  • Sample Lifeguard Contract page has been created.  This page includes a fillable PDF that schools/school divisions can use if they are hiring a lifeguard.
